City of St. Albert and Sturgeon County Hold First Annexation Negotiating Committee Meeting
The City of St. Albert and Sturgeon County Annexation Negotiating Committee met on December 6, 2017.
The City of St. Albert and Sturgeon County Annexation Negotiating Committee met on December 6, 2017. This was the first meeting for the joint committee, which includes representation from both Councils, following the City of St. Albert’s Notice of Intent to Annex lands from Sturgeon County on June 15, 2017.
At the meeting, the Committee appointed Councillor Susan Evans of Sturgeon County as Chair of the Annexation Negotiating Committee and its main spokesperson. Councillor Ray Watkins of the City of St. Albert was appointed Vice-Chair. The Negotiating Committee intends to maintain the collaborative processes that the City and the County have undertaken over the last several years. “We are committed to working together to plan the best way forward for our two municipalities and our residents,” says Mayor Cathy Heron.
“Sturgeon County and the City of St. Albert will continue to be good neighbours and have frank and productive discussions as we work together in the best interests of our residents,” says Alanna Hnatiw, Mayor of Sturgeon County. The City of St. Albert, who will be leading the public consultation process, is currently commissioning planning and growth studies, as part of the application.
While negotiations by the Committee will remain confidential, resident input will be requested in the coming months. The Committee will be tasked with discussing matters such as compensation, tax protection, bylaw enforcement, municipal service-levels, and the final boundary change to be proposed to the Municipal Government Board.
The map represents the maximum potential area to be annexed. The final annexation area will be identified by the Annexation Negotiating Committee and will be approved by both Sturgeon County Council and City of St. Albert Council before the proposal is sent to the Municipal Government Board for consideration.
Residents in St. Albert and Sturgeon County will receive specific information about the annexation and will have the opportunity to attend open houses and subscribe to an electronic newsletter. The City is committed to providing updates to the public throughout the annexation process.
