Sturgeon County holds first meeting of COVID-19 Recovery Task Force.

Sturgeon County, AB – Sturgeon County’s COVID-19 Recovery Task Force will hold its first meeting on June 1, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. via teleconference. Council established the Task Force on May 12, 2020 to provide policy and legislative advice to Council respecting Sturgeon County’s social and economic recovery as a result of the adverse impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Task Force will make recommendations to assist residents, businesses, and not-for-profit organizations for the well-being, safety, and resilience of Sturgeon County.

Annexation Negotiating Sub-Committee Update

The City of St. Albert and Sturgeon County’s Annexation Negotiating Sub-Committee met on May 25, 2020 to discuss the City’s proposed annexation of a portion of land from Sturgeon County. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the meetings have been held virtually. During the meeting, the Sub-Committee discussed project timing and outstanding items for negotiation, including compensation. 

Carrot Creek Regional Master Drainage Plan

The Municipalities of St. Albert, Sturgeon County and the Town of Morinville, have collaboratively embarked on the development of a Regional Master Drainage Plan, surrounding Carrot Creek. The Master Drainage Plan will provide various outputs, inclusive of long-term support to lands within the watershed and study the movement of surface water throughout the area towards Carrot Creek.

Sturgeon County Votes to Explore the Benefits of Regional Transit Services

Sturgeon County Council has decided to transition its role on the Regional Transit Services Commission (RTSC) to an advisory membership. The decision will take effect immediately and will support the County to weigh-in on key issues without a formalized voting or financial requirement.

Sturgeon County Council passes 2020 Tax Rate Bylaw

On April 28, 2020 Sturgeon County formally passed its 2020 Tax Rate Bylaw. Recognizing the ongoing challenges presented by COVID-19, the County has decided to forgo earlier plans to increase tax rates by 1.18%. The decision to keep rates steady with a 0% increase balances the need to support local ratepayers while focusing on key capital and operating initiatives to support the local economy.

Sturgeon County resource extraction regulation changes to be informed by public engagement

Sturgeon County, Alberta – Sturgeon County today passed a motion to move forward with creative public engagement strategies related to resource extraction regulation bylaw review.

“We are fortunate to have valuable sand and gravel resources at our disposal,” said Sturgeon County Mayor Alanna Hnatiw, “The County recognizes the importance of protecting these natural assets and proactively managing potential extraction guidelines and policies.”

Annexation Negotiating Sub-Committee Agrees to Annexation Boundary

The City of St. Albert and Sturgeon County’s Annexation Negotiating Sub-Committee met on April 17, 2020 to discuss the City’s proposed annexation of a portion of land from Sturgeon County.

The two municipalities are pleased to announce that the Sub-Committee has completed negotiations for an annexation boundary line recommendation. The boundary line is similar to the annexation area presented to the public in 2019, but has been adjusted within the northwest section, based upon intermunicipal negotiation. Lands that were previously removed from annexation consideration in the southwest and northeast sections of the area remain excluded.

Council votes to waive penalties for residential utility bills and extends residential tax deadline to reduce economic impact of COVID-19 on residents

Sturgeon County, Alberta – Yesterday, Sturgeon County Council voted to waive residential penalties on unpaid municipal water and wastewater accounts from March 31 to June 30 while assuring disconnections of these services will not be performed by Sturgeon County during this time period.
