Sturgeon County steps up to support non-profits

Council commits an extra $89,400 for 28 local organizations

On February 23, 2021, Sturgeon County Council approved providing a one-time grant to 28 different local non-profit organizations. Altogether, an extra $89,400 will be allocated to support the work of Sturgeon County’s 17 community associations, nine seniors’ associations, and two arenas. The one-time grant will be in addition to the funds received as part of the 2021 Community Organization Operating and Capital Grant funding program.

What do you use the internet for?

It’s almost a silly question because, in 2021, the answer is: nearly everything.

Municipalities have long been ringing the alarm bell of why high-speed internet is a necessity, not a luxury. Since the early 2000s and broken promises of the Last Mile of the Supernet, rural municipalities have been calling upon the provincial and federal governments to address rural connectivity.

The Redwater Detachment is off to a busy start in 2021. This month the detachment received 138 calls for service. These calls consisted of 3 assaults, 3 breach of peace, 3 break and enters, 3 Frauds, 2 mischiefs, 5 Thefts of motor vehicles, and 14 traffic collisions.


New funding received to attract more investment in Villeneuve Airport and region

Sturgeon County is receiving $2.2 million from the Government of Alberta’s Municipal Stimulus Program to construct a waterline connecting the Hamlet of Villeneuve and the Villeneuve Airport. The funding, part of Alberta’s Recovery Plan, will be used to construct a waterline essential to the airport’s growth and support business development.
