Dale MacMillan Memorial Scholarship awarded

Today, Sturgeon County Council presented Kelsey Krywko and Bryn Soetaert with the Dale MacMillan Memorial Scholarship for Community Leadership.
Kelsey Krywko is studying mechanical engineering at the University of Alberta. Kelsey volunteered with West County Hearth and helps to maintain the Villeneuve Community Hall.

“Seeing the appreciation for the hours you dedicate to helping others is a great feeling, whether you receive an award or not.” said Kelsey.
“As I begin my career and future endeavours, I will strive to continue to find time for this very important part of my life.”

Bryn Soetaert is enrolled in NAIT’s Construction Engineering Technology program and was surprised and thrilled to learn of being selected as a 2022 recipient.

“My family and I knew Dale MacMillan personally, so it means a lot to us,” said Bryn.

The award is presented to a Sturgeon County resident(s) enrolled in a recognized post-secondary institution who also practises community leadership and involvement. Bryn’s community service started with small events in Calahoo, and recently coached two minor hockey teams.   “Community service is free, and it goes a long way,” explained Bryn. “Small or large, any help given to a community, or even a stranger, is always a good thing.”

Dale MacMillan was instrumental in helping achieve a balance between residents and gravel extraction operations in the Calahoo and Villeneuve areas. The scholarship also recognizes his commitment to community involvement.   Each recipient received a scholarship worth $2,000.

The awards are made possible through the Calahoo-Villeneuve Gravel Community Enhancement Fund.  More information on the Dale MacMillan Memorial Scholarship for Community Leadership can be found on Sturgeon County’s website.
