Notification June 24, 2020 – Please note that the Orange Hawkweed, Meadow Hawkweed and Mouse-Ear Hawkweed have been spotted in Sturgeon County. These are prohibited noxious weeds according to the Alberta Weed Control Act, which means they must be destroyed to limit the spread.
These types of weeds invade grassland and form dense mats of rosettes. The soil chemistry becomes acidic, which makes the habitat less suitable for existing vegetation. Pollen from orange hawkweed flowers releases toxins that inhibit the seed germination, seedling emergence, and early growth of surrounding plants.
If you see them, please contact Sturgeon County’s Agriculture Services department at (780) 939-8349 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
