Dale MacMillan Memorial Scholarship open for applications
If you are a student and a resident of Sturgeon County, consider applying for the Dale MacMillan Memorial Scholarship for Community Leadership. This award recognizes a Sturgeon County resident who practises community leadership and involvement. There are two scholarships worth $2,000 each that will be awarded.
Dale MacMillan was instrumental in helping achieve a balance between residents and gravel extraction operations in the Calahoo and Villeneuve areas. The scholarship also recognizes his commitment to community involvement.
The scholarship is unique because there isn’t an age limit, but the applicant must be enrolled in a recognized post-secondary institution and must be a Sturgeon County resident.
Last year’s recipient, Nicholas (Nico) Lozinski, was born and raised in Calahoo. He’s familiar with Dale’s legacy.
“I have had the privilege of hearing the numerous stories of Dale's contributions within the community and his overall positive attitude towards life, family, and friends,” said Nico.
Nico is currently employed as a firefighter with Sturgeon County. He was 29 when he applied for the scholarship. It helped with his tuition at Lakeland College where he is working on a Bachelor of Applied Business Emergency Services.
He urges residents of all ages to not only follow Dale’s example of community service, but also to apply for the scholarship.
“The award is almost showcasing that it’s never too late to educate yourself – that’s something that Dale encouraged,” added Nico.
