New funding received to attract more investment in Villeneuve Airport and region
Sturgeon County is receiving $2.2 million from the Government of Alberta’s Municipal Stimulus Program for improvements at Villeneuve Airport.
The funding, part of Alberta’s Recovery Plan, will be used to construct a waterline essential to the airport’s growth and support business development. Once complete, the project will help attract investment in the Villeneuve region, creating more local jobs and diversifying the regional economy.
“Aerospace development is a key component of Alberta’s economic relaunch strategy and we are pleased to provide funding through the Municipal Stimulus Program for this project. This investment in water infrastructure will play an important role in advancing development at the Villeneuve Airport and in the northwest Edmonton metro region. Simply put, supporting existing infrastructure, allowing for growth and development in the region, will be of a net benefit to the entire province for years to come as part of our long-range strategic plan of diversification and economic growth.”
Shane Getson, MLA, Lac St. Anne-Parkland
“Through the collective efforts of regional partners who form the Villeneuve Landing Network, we are working to propel economic diversification at Villeneuve Airport and the nearby surrounding lands to increase opportunities for our future and that of the greater region. Our vision includes developing the lands into a general aviation, manufacturing, transportation and logistics hub that connects specialized regional products and services with global markets.”
Alanna Hnatiw, Mayor, Sturgeon County
“Villeneuve Airport is a critical facility for the Edmonton Metro Region. It supports important general aviation and flight training, complements Edmonton International Airport and provides a second base of operations for aviation innovation and business development. With this water line construction, and our partnership with the Villeneuve Landing Network, future growth can take off in Sturgeon County and create jobs and opportunities for everyone.”
Tom Ruth, President and CEO, Edmonton Airports
Sturgeon County has identified Villeneuve Airport and its surrounding lands as a priority for attracting investment and a key part of the County’s economic diversification strategy. Along with the waterline, Sturgeon County will also invest up to $7.3 million for improving broadband connectivity in a pilot project area that includes the Villeneuve Airport.
The new waterline will run west from the Hamlet of Villeneuve down Highway 633 and north at Range Road 270 to tie-in to the airport’s reservoir. Construction is scheduled to begin in Spring 2021.
