Statement from Mayor Hnatiw on the St. Jean Baptiste Church fire

Statement from Sturgeon County Mayor Alanna Hnatiw on the St. Jean Baptiste Church fire:

On behalf of Sturgeon County, I wish to express our condolences to our neighbours, the Town of Morinville, on the loss of the iconic St. Jean Baptiste Church to a tragic fire on June 30.

Although the cause of the fire remains under investigation, regardless of the circumstances, I am sure we can all appreciate that losing such an important part of the community can have a significant impact on everyone in the region.

I wish to express my gratitude to all the firefighters from the area who extinguished the fire. As a region, I am proud of our ability to come together in a time of need to support our one another.

The skill and speed of emergency response meant the people located near the church, including seniors, were evacuated safely. This fire could have had more dire consequences.
