Sturgeon County statement regarding tampering and theft of election signs

Sturgeon County is receiving reports that 2021 municipal election candidate signs are being removed from along roadways and other public property without permission.

Election signs are an important way for candidates to generate awareness that they are running for Council. Election signs are permitted on public lands and along provincial highways if they meet provincial guidelines. Candidates can also put signs on private property if permission is granted by the property owner.

Tampering with election signs, including vandalism, damage, or stealing signs, is an offence under the Criminal Code of Canada and the Canada Elections Act. Anyone caught defacing or stealing signs can face charges, including mischief to property or theft under $5,000.

If you see anyone tampering with or stealing an election sign, please contact the RCMP non-emergency line:

Morinville RCMP: 780-939-1600

Redwater RCMP: 780-942-3607

St. Albert RCMP:  780-458-4300
