Sturgeon County Council Recap | January 11, 2022

Here are the highlights from the January 11, 2022, Sturgeon County Council Meeting:

Canada Summer Job Grant

Sturgeon County will be submitting an application for five temporary positions to the Canada Summer Job Grant, a program that provides funding for people between 15 and 30 years. Through the program, the County will receive up to 50% of the province’s minimum wage for any position that would not exist without the grant. The positions are a Research Support Officer, Finance Clerk, Economic Development Summer Student, Digital Communications Assistant, and an Information Services Summer Student. The County’s portion will be  $51,684.75, funded from reserves.

Borrowing Bylaws for Road Construction Projects

Council gave first reading to seven bylaws that, when passed, will allow the County to borrow money to cover the cost of road construction projects proposed for this year: 

The bylaws will come back before Council to consider second and third reading at a future Council Meeting.

Land Use Bylaw Amendments

Council continued the public hearing for Bylaw 1561/21, which proposes amendments to Land Use Bylaw 1385/17 based on an audit of the County’s land use districts. Following the public hearing, Council amended the bylaw before giving second and third reading, removing (confirm section) of the proposed redistrictings in response to resident feedback.

 COVID Policy for Council

After considering existing directives for County staff related to COVID-19, Council has directed Administration to prepare a policy providing direction for Council members. The draft policy will come back before Council at a future meeting.

Next Council Meeting

The next Sturgeon County Council meeting will be held at 9:00 a.m. on January 25, 2022.
