Agribusiness Agritourism Review

The Agribusiness and Agritourism Review will provide Sturgeon County with a better understanding of how to support and grow our local agribusiness and agritourism industry.

Sturgeon County is an agricultural powerhouse invested in positive growth for its residents and businesses. As land uses change and adapt to growing agribusiness and agritourism sectors, the County is intent on respecting its farming and agriculture history, fostering collaboration between residents and operators, and embracing the future.

A nine-member Task Force will directly support the review, made of seven community members and two members of Council. The members were selected because of their expertise and experience in the agribusiness and agritourism sectors within Sturgeon County. A team of independent consultants has been engaged to support the Task Force in conducting this review. The Task Force is anticipated to meet on a regular basis over the next 10 months, providing direction during the review.

The Agribusiness and Agritourism Review Task Force will:

  • conduct a review of local, provincial and national agribusiness and agritourism regulatory best practices
  • identify the needs and expectations of Sturgeon County’s businesses and landowners
  • provide recommendations on how to support and implement potential regulations and policy.

Draft Land Use Bylaw Adjustments for Comment

Sturgeon County is currently unable to consider certain activities that agribusiness operators may want to consider due to the lack of appropriate definitions in our bylaws: Agritourism, Agritourism Event, and Diversified Agribusiness.

With direction from the Agribusiness and Agritourism Review Task Force, the County prepared draft definitions, likely activities, and restrictions that could be considered for each of the three agri-related activities, and the Task Force recently requested public input on the proposed definitions and thanks everyone who completed the online comment form, prepared a written submission, and registered to present at the Task Force's January 20 virtual meeting.

Thanks to your input, the Task Force will be able to finalize and present its recommendations to Sturgeon County Council before the spring season.
