Water Conservation

County-Wide Odd/Even Watering

To promote water conservation awareness and minimize the risk of future water shortages, we are encouraging residents to participate in the voluntary Odd/Even Watering Program.

Odd / even watering corresponds to the last digit of their home address and the current calendar date. If your address ends in an even number, you are allowed to water on even dates throughout the month. If your address ends in an odd number, you are allowed to water on odd dates throughout the month

For example:

  • #17 Waterway Boulevard can water on an odd calendar date. 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, etc.
  • #24 Waterway Boulevard can water on an even calendar date. 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, etc.

Note: It is the address of your house / property that the residents is on, not the subdivision address.

Helpful Tips

Conserve water and save money on your water bill by using the following helpful tips:

  • Water in the morning – It will reduce water lost to evaporation. Watering slowly helps the soil absorb water and prevents run-off.
  • Save your rain –Rain barrels are a great way to capture rainwater and save you money!
  • Reduce indoor water use- Install low-flow shower heads and low-volume or dual flush toilets to cut water use by more than 30 percent or more.
  • Limit use of your garbage disposal– Composting saves water and nourishes your flower or vegetable garden.
  • Fix your leaks – Leaky faucets and running toilets waste between 9,000 and 200,000 litres per year.

Water Demand Management

During prolonged dry weather events or periods of excessive water consumption, Sturgeon County may implement a Water Demand Management Protocol either County wide or to specific regions of Sturgeon County. This is to ensure water conservation in our reservoirs for essential water use and fire protection purposes. During a “Water Demand Management” event, Sturgeon County will look to suspend all non-essential water use. Restricting non-essential water use includes:

  • suspending all hydrant and sewer flushing
  • residential lawn watering
  • street cleaning
  • firefighting training
  • park and recreational area water

Public notification of Water Demand Measures, which includes odd/even water notifications, will be advertised through Sturgeon County by way of roadside signage, letter delivery notices, the website, social media and other communication channels.

During a water ban, the use of non-essential water, such as by watering your lawn, can result in a fine.

Sturgeon County would like to wish you a happy St. Patrick's Day!
