An approach (driveway) is the access between a property line and the adjacent roadway. To ensure approaches are safe, County approval is required for all new and modified approaches that connect to roads within the County.
To build, upgrade, move, or remove an approach (driveway):
- Apply: All approach construction requires an approved application before work begins. Fill out and submit an Application for Approach Construction:
- Email to approach@sturgeoncounty.ca, or
- Submit to Sturgeon County, Planning and Development Services; 9613 – 100 Street, Morinville, AB T8R 1L9
- Build: Once approved, the approach must be built to the standards outlined in the application.
- Final Approval: Completed work must be approved by the County. Any approach not approved by Sturgeon County will be removed at the landowner’s expense.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are we allowed more than one approach onto our land?
Generally, no. According to General Municipal Servicing Standards (GMSS) sections 3.1.15 and 4.1.5.7, only one driveway is permitted for single-unit developments. An additional driveway or shared driveway may be considered when submitted with justification and approved by the County.
Why do we have to pay a deposit?
- To ensure compliance with current Sturgeon County GMSS requirements
- To ensure proper restoration of the road right-of-way and to protect Sturgeon County’s public infrastructure
- To guarantee timely completion of approach construction
Can I make my approach wider?
Yes, if it meets the General Municipal Servicing Standards (GMSS) standards and you pay the fee required in the current Fees & Charges Schedule.
What if I build without an approved application?
The County may remove the approach at the cost of the landowner and not replace it.
Can I buy a new or used culvert from Sturgeon County?
No. The County does not sell materials.
Can I put a used culvert in my driveway approach?
No, used culverts may be damaged or worn, thus the integrity of the culvert is compromised.
Who do I call to inspect my approach once I am finished installing it?

Can I use a different sized culvert than what is specified?
Culverts must be at least 500mm in diameter or greater to match any existing upstream culverts in the drainage course.
Do I need to keep a copy of this approved application?
Yes, a copy of the approved application must be available upon demand from the contractor completing the work as described.
