The Community Spirit Grant is open to any Sturgeon County resident who has an idea for a project that supports community pride, safety, or inclusion and that addresses social change. This can be done in a variety of ways, such as: workshops or educational events (e.g. crime prevention), community art projects (murals, showcases), enhancing or creating neighbourhood gathering places (maybe getting creative with some unused space in your neighbourhood), community lending projects (little free libraries, tool lending), community gardens, or improvement projects.
Applicants are eligible for a maximum of $1500 as well as administrative support on permits, help with advertising, one on one planning meetings and recommendations to enhance project sustainability, inviting special guests or members from other departments (council, mayor, fire, police), as well as additional supplies (activity bags, lawn games, board games, canopies). If your event has a community clean-up component, we can also offer supplies such as garbage and recycling bags, gloves, garbage pickers, and water bottles.
The project must:
- Promote community spirit and pride of community assets and space or create educational opportunity and/or community awareness
- Provide public benefit to your neighbourhood within Sturgeon County
- Involve community members in creating and completing the project, working in partnership with the County
- Be completed and sustained by the community
- Foster and sustain positive community relations
- Demonstrate that there is community support for the project
Note: Faith groups/religious organizations, schools, businesses, and/or non-profit organizations are not eligible unless clearly partnered with the local residents to mobilize social change.
Be creative! If you have an idea that isn’t on our list, please contact the Community Program Coordinator to discuss your idea prior to completing the application.
