Acting Director, Economic Innovation & Growth and Senior Investment Attraction Lead

Mike leads the activities of Sturgeon County Economic Innovation and Growth including department strategy, stakeholder outreach, investment attraction, business retention and expansion efforts. He plays a key role in regional economic development initiatives alongside stakeholders such as Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association (AIHA) and Edmonton Global (EG). He also provides advisory services for developers and investors looking to advance projects in Sturgeon County. Mike works with corporate investors, site selectors and developers involved in the land development, rail, petrochemical, advanced manufacturing, transportation and logistics, defence and security industries.
Mike has significant experience in both the private and public sector, joining Sturgeon County after leading industry and business development initiatives at Alberta Economic Development and Trade (now Jobs, Economy and Innovation). He has extensive knowledge and sector expertise in multiple industries including midstream and downstream energy, petrochemicals, advanced manufacturing, transportation and logistics, aerospace and defence, and agribusiness.
Executive Advisor, Development & Ecosystem Competitiveness
James is responsible for continually improving Sturgeon County’s competitive position with an emphasis on industrial development areas, the Energy Value Chain, and ecosystem evolution and development. He works with a variety of stakeholders to identify and implement strategies, tactics, and policy needed for attracting investment in value-added energy products such as hydrogen, ammonia, and petrochemical derivatives.
James has over twenty-five years of experience in both the private and public sector, joining Sturgeon County from Alberta Energy. He has extensive knowledge of strategic and business planning, research and analysis, natural gas transmission and distribution pipeline systems, and rail transportation. James is also a registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Alberta.
Karim Khamisa, MSc
Investment Attraction Officer
As Investment Attraction Officer, Karim’s focus is on attracting development to Sturgeon County’s core development areas including Sturgeon Valley and our industrial parks. Karim acts as a catalyst for growth in the county by interacting with land developers, commercial real estate professionals, real estate industry organizations and other development stakeholders. He also works with internal teams across the organization to facilitate development, providing critical intelligence, investor advocacy, and actionable advice that begets timely development.
Karim has experience in both the public and private sectors and has worked in retail, technical support, and healthcare. He has an MSc in Management with a focus in International Business, and experience advising executive leadership teams and boards of directors. Karim works alongside investors, developers, and site selectors to help them identify how Sturgeon County can help them achieve their strategic objectives. Outside of work he is an avid reader, window shopper (supporting local, of course), and eater.
Business Retention and Expansion Lead
Leanne focuses on business retention and expansion initiatives with Sturgeon County’s existing business community across all sectors. She is connected with the local business community and regularly conducts ongoing business visits, survey work and facilitates business to business connection.
Leanne identifies new opportunities and markets for businesses, promotes awareness of funding support and works to mitigate barriers impeding growth. Working closely with economic development’s investment attraction team, Leanne works to identify businesses and support services within the county to support investment and strengthen the supply chain.
Economic Development Specialist
As Economic Development Specialist, Amy organizes all activities of the Sturgeon County Economic Development and Ecosystem Services team. This includes event management, business visits, tours, celebrations and marketing and communications planning. Amy also coordinates all the activities and meetings for the Economic Development Advisory Board.
Amy works on Tourism and Small Business initiatives and has over 15 years of experience as a professional administrator and over 20 years of event planning experience. Amy’s focus is providing supports to small and medium sized businesses by executing events and initiatives that provide information on how to grow, diversify, access available funding and allow for networking opportunities.
