At Interior Heavy Equipment Training School (IHE School), the mission is simple but profound: transform lives by providing hands-on training that equips individuals with the skills, confidence and experience to thrive in various industries. For nearly two decades, this commitment has driven the business to become a leader in heavy equipment operator training, helping to shape the future workforce for sectors such as mining, oil and gas, construction, forestry, and recycling.
Founded in 2005 by a passionate individual with just one machine in Winfield, BC, IHE School has since expanded its reach to Alberta, with training sites in Innisfail and Sturgeon County, as well as a mobile division serving Indigenous and industry partners. Over the years, IHE School has become a trusted resource for employers seeking skilled operators, and its graduates are known for entering the workforce ready to contribute from day one.

A Hands-On Approach to Training
What sets IHE School apart is its emphasis on real-world, hands-on equipment training. Students don’t just sit in classrooms—they learn by doing, working with machinery and equipment that reflects what they will encounter in their future careers. The programs focus on essential areas like safety, preventative maintenance, and communication skills, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for the challenges of a production environment.
Safety is a cornerstone of IHE School’s philosophy, and all training is conducted in a controlled, safe environment. The school also takes pride in offering various organizations opportunities for team-building exercises and hands-on exposure to machinery.
This year, as IHE School celebrates its 20th anniversary, the business continues to invest in the future. New technology is being introduced to enhance efficiency, allowing the team to spend more time supporting students. Additionally, the school is relaunching its open houses and job fairs to strengthen its connection with the community and industry partners.
“Our recent move from Edmonton to a location in Sturgeon County, near Villeneuve, has been met with enthusiasm by the surrounding community,” says Christine Hansen, COO. “The move has provided the perfect backdrop for growth, with more space to operate and an even stronger local support network for students and youth interested in a career in heavy equipment operations.”

Building a Lasting Legacy of Success

IHE School’s relationship with its students doesn’t end at graduation. Unlike traditional institutions, IHE School stays connected with its alumni for life. Graduates continue to receive job leads, ongoing support, and optional Alumni training opportunities to help them advance their careers. Many former students return to share their success stories and mentor new students, creating a cycle of inspiration and motivation.
“We are not just training equipment operators; we are building a community,” says Christine Hansen. The school’s Alumni network is vast, with many graduates advancing into supervisory roles and contributing to the continued success of the industry.
IHE School is more than a training facility—it’s a place where lives are transformed, careers are built, and communities are strengthened.
IHE School is always looking to connect with potential students and industry partners. If you’re interested in learning more about a career as a heavy equipment operator, consider booking a site tour.
