When the unexpected loss of their father in 2020 left them with the responsibility of a cherished family property in Namao, siblings Brendan and Julie-Ann McNeilly faced a pivotal decision. With their hearts rooted in the history of the family store they decided to breathe new life into it, reviving its legacy. “Growing up, we saw our grandma run the store and witnessed how important it was to everyone. We knew we had to carry that torch,” says Julie-Ann. “Brendan and I had been looking for a chance to go into business together, and this felt like the perfect opportunity to continue our family’s story.”
Heart of the Community
Johnny’s Store is more than just a place to shop; it’s a gathering spot for the community. Offering a unique blend of specialty high-quality groceries, local products and unique gifts, the store provides something for everyone. Whether it’s grabbing a fresh cup of coffee, picking up a bottle of wine, or browsing the store’s collection of Johnny’s branded merchandise, customers can enjoy an experience that fosters connection. “After just a few days of opening, we’ve been overwhelmed with joy seeing people reconnect—reuniting after years, reminiscing over stories about the store, and the community,” Julie-Ann says. “It’s all about bringing people together.”
Looking ahead, Johnny’s Store plans to grow with new products and offerings, further enhancing its role as a community hub. Julie-Ann, a trained sommelier, plans to start a wine club and host beer and cocktail events in the new year, offering a space for people to bond over shared experiences. Additionally, the store is committed to featuring local suppliers from the Edmonton region, Alberta, and beyond, ensuring that there’s always something fresh and exciting for customers to enjoy.
Planning for Growth
An exciting development is the plan to add an outdoor patio in the spring of 2025. This will allow the store to expand its space, providing customers with an inviting area to enjoy food, drinks, and good company in the warmer months.
Sturgeon County has played a key role in the store’s success. “We can’t speak highly enough about the support we received from the County,” Julie-Ann shares. “Every department was incredibly helpful, making the reopening process smooth and seamless. We’ve even started planning additional business ventures within the County based on the positive experience we’ve had.”
As Johnny’s Store settles into its new chapter, the siblings are filled with gratitude for the community’s warm reception. They’ve been touched by how kind and supportive everyone has been. The stories people have shared about the family and Johnny’s Store are truly special, and they’re cherishing every moment of this journey.
For anyone seeking a place to connect, reminisce, and create new memories, Johnny’s Store is the heart of the community—and it’s only just getting started.
