A major new project is coming to Sturgeon County. In a landmark investment, META is building its first Canadian data centre right here in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. This project is valued at more than $13 billion CAD and marks a major milestone in the company’s global infrastructure expansion.
This investment will support:
- increased non-residential tax base
- more job opportunities for residents
- increased support for local businesses
- growth in our local economy
- new partnerships with industry and education
“We welcome META to Sturgeon County,” says Sturgeon County Mayor Alana Hnatiw. “This project will create opportunities for our residents, diversify our tax base and support our community for years to come.”

Why Sturgeon County was chosen
Sturgeon County is home to Alberta’s Industrial Heartland and supports responsible growth, job creation, and long-term community success. Our unique community offers a place where residents, businesses, and industries can thrive together.
META chose Sturgeon County because the region is ready for projects like this. We offer:
- pre-zoned industrial land
- strong infrastructure and utilities
- access to skilled workers
“This project reinforces Sturgeon County’s role as a premier destination for transformative industrial investment,” said Mayor Hnatiw. “We are proud to welcome META and look forward to the long-term economic and community development opportunities this development will create for our residents and businesses.”

A big boost for local jobs and residents
The Sturgeon Data Centre is one of the largest private sector investments in Alberta to date and offers many job opportunities for residents:
- Up to 3,000 jobs during construction
- More than 300 long-term operational jobs
These jobs include skilled trades, maintenance, and technical roles. This means more chances for people to work close to home and build long-term careers.
Local businesses may also benefit by providing services, supplies, and hospitality and service industry supports during construction and operations.
Caring for the environment and community
META has committed to being a responsible neighbour. The company is taking steps to reduce its environmental impact and protect local resources.
Key commitments include:
- Water care: Work toward being water positive by 2030 by giving back more water than is used
- Efficient design: A closed-loop, liquid-cooled system means there is no operational water used in the cooling system. Water use at the site is limited to domestic uses, fire protection safety, and equipment maintenance
- Clean energy: Match 100% of electricity use with renewable or clean energy
- Fair costs: Pay the full cost of utilities so residents do not pay more
- Transparency: Publicly share water and energy use each year
Future growth
Data centres help power the digital services people use every day, like cloud storage, apps, and artificial intelligence.
This new facility will:
- Support growing technology needs
- Help attract more innovation to the region
- Strengthen the local economy
- Diversify our non-residential tax base
For residents, this means a stronger, more diverse community with new opportunities for the future.
