Métis Week in Sturgeon County

Published on Nov 04, 2022

Métis Week will be celebrated from
November 14 to 18, 2022.

Métis Week is a national celebration of Métis heritage. This year, we are honouring it with a series of events coordinated with the Métis Nation of Alberta.

What is Métis Week?

Louis Riel

Métis people have a significant history in these lands and have been living along the Sturgeon River since the 1700s.
Canadians recognize Louis Riel Day on November 16, by holding commemorative ceremonies on the date of his execution. We recognize the Right Honourable Louis Riel and his sacrifice in the fight for Métis Rights.
In addition to Louis Riel Day, the Métis Nation of Alberta has declared the week surrounding November 16 as “Métis Week.” The week is devoted to commemorating the sacrifices of the Métis who continue to strive toward rights and recognition as a distinct nation.
