NEWS RELEASE – Fire rescue equipment stolen, Calahoo community continues to face challenges in rural crime

Approximately $60,000 worth of fire rescue equipment was stolen from the Calahoo Fire Station in Sturgeon County in the early morning of December 22. Items that were stolen include rescue equipment used to extract people from motor vehicle collisions including a spreader commonly called the ‘jaws of life’, industrial cutter, cut saw, generator, and other assorted rescue tools.

“This is a disappointing and senseless crime, as it impacts our community and emergency services’ ability to help people when they need us the most,” said Fire Chief Chad Moore. “We’re currently working with the RCMP to review evidence as they investigate this serious crime.”

Sturgeon County Protective Services has redistributed equipment from other fire stations to minimize disruptions to service. The Calahoo Fire Station is fully operational, and residents will not see any service impacts.

“I commend our Fire Services for acting so quickly to ensure residents are not impacted by the theft of these life-saving tools,” said Sturgeon County Mayor Alanna Hnatiw. “During the busy holiday travel season, it is essential that our equipment is ready for use at all times to keep people safe and moving smoothly.”

The Calahoo community has seen an increase in rural crime, especially in theft. Businesses like the general store there, which supplies food and other goods to the local community, has suffered losses, which greatly impacts residents in the area. Supporting safe rural communities in Alberta is uniquely challenging and requires collaboration between many partners to work towards shared goals in tackling crime.

If anyone has any information about this or any other crime, they are urged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Tips can also be submitted anonymously online at crimestoppers.ab.ca.
