As of April 17, 2026, the ban on recreational OHVs and ATVs is still in place in parts of Sturgeon County and in the Redwater Provincial Recreation Area.
The banned area includes:
- East of Range Road 212 to the North Saskatchewan River
- South of Township Road 580 to the North Saskatchewan River
This ban is in place because the area is still recovering from the Redwater Recreation Area wildfire in spring 2025 and there is still a high risk of fire.
The ban applies to recreational use of:
- Snowmobiles
- Quads
- Dirt bikes
The ban does not apply to people using OHVs or ATVs on their own private property. As the Redwater Provincial Recreation Area is under provincial jurisdiction, information about OHV/ATV use within the park can be found on the Alberta Parks website or by calling 780-922-3293.
Sturgeon County will keep enforcing this ban until May 31, 2026. At that time, the situation will be reviewed and the ban may be lifted or extended depending on fire risk.
Although there has been some snow and rain over the winter, this is still a period of high fire risk. Some areas are wetter, but long‑term dryness remains a challenge. Plants are not fully green yet, and dry grass and other materials can easily catch fire. Spring weather can also change quickly, which can increase wildfire risk.
This ban will be strictly enforced. The fine for breaking the ban is $500.
