Following the regional emergency response to the Redwater Recreation Area Wildfire, Sturgeon County Council has accepted the findings of an independent After-Action Report (AAR) that assessed the response and identified ways to strengthen future readiness.
The wildfire, which ignited in May 2025 and burned more than 3,200 hectares, required extensive cooperation among local fire departments, municipalities, and provincial partners. The wildfire resulted in area property loss and economic damages, but no loss of life.
The report found that emergency teams worked effectively together, managed financial processes responsibly, and made quick decisions under difficult conditions. The report also noted challenges such as rapidly changing fire behaviour, overlapping roles, and fatigue among responders—realities that are common in large-scale disasters. Overall, reviewers provided 52 recommendations focused on training, communication, and coordination. Most recommendations are practical and low-cost improvements that will help Sturgeon County keep residents safe during future emergencies.
“This report gives us a clear roadmap to strengthen what already works and respond even more effectively next time,” said Sturgeon County Fire Chief and Incident Commander Chad Moore. “We’re already acting on many of the recommendations and remain committed to the remainder, so we’re ready for whatever comes our way.”
