Boards & Committees

Sturgeon County boards and committees are comprised of elected officials and citizens. These boards and committees play an important role in the governance of Sturgeon County and contribute to the community outcome of Collaborative Governance established in Council’s 2022-2025 Strategic Plan.

Council has established several advisory committees, which consider topics relevant to their respective mandates directed by Council, that emerge as inquiries from the public or are initiated by the Committee.

Council has also established several quasi-judicial appeal boards, which hear matters within their respective jurisdictions and make decisions based on evidence presented during public hearings.

Annually, Council issues mandate letters to most of its advisory committees. These mandate letters guide the advisory committees on their activities to achieve Council’s strategic priorities. The mandate letters are available on the respective advisory committee pages.

To ensure the highest standard of conduct from members of Sturgeon County’s boards and committees, and consistent with the principles of transparent and accountable government, Council has established a Board and Committee Member Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct establishes standards for the ethical conduct of board and committee public members and a procedure for enforcing those standards.

Board and Committee Members

Unless otherwise established by bylaw, board and committee members must be Sturgeon County residents.

Per the Board and Committee Member Appointments Policy, Council seeks to appoint members that represent the diversity of the Sturgeon County community including members diverse in race, religious beliefs, colour, gender, gender identity, gender expression, physical disability, mental disability, age, ancestry, place of origin, marital status, source of income, family status, and sexual orientation.

Generally, members of Council serve one-year terms and citizens serve three-year terms unless otherwise directed by bylaw or Council resolution. Members can be reappointed for successive terms.

In accordance with the Board and Committee Public Member Remuneration Policy, public members are eligible to receive remuneration for their participation in board and committee meetings, hearings, conferences, conventions, and professional development opportunities.
