Sturgeon County Chief Administrative Officer Announces Departure

Sturgeon County, AB – Reegan McCullough, Sturgeon County’s Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), announced his departure from Sturgeon County at the regular Council meeting on September 10, 2024.

Mr. McCullough joined Sturgeon County in 2018. Under his leadership over the last six years, he has modernized County operations, worked tirelessly on behalf of the community, developed positive relationships, and guided Sturgeon County Council through times of rapid change.

“From day one, Reegan has been an extraordinary leader for the Sturgeon County organization and community. As CAO, he has demonstrated a keen ability to innovate, think strategically, and act quickly to jump on the many opportunities Sturgeon is fortunate to enjoy,” said Sturgeon County Mayor, Alanna Hnaitw.

“I have always appreciated that Reegan has the courage to challenge the status quo—something he has evidenced numerous times. He brought in a new way of thinking for corporate planning, insisting our Strategic Plan be redrafted in a way that is plain language and relatable. Reegan also led the charge on our successful appeal at the Edmonton Region Growth Board to advocate for development and future jobs in our Villeneuve Airport area. Reegan has modelled a people-based approach for staff and encouraged courageous workplace conversations. He has modernized our business practices and put sound policies in place.”

“Reegan’s openness to exploring solutions and new opportunities was instrumental in the formation, direction and outcomes achieved at the Edmonton Region Hydrogen Hub. His contribution on behalf of Sturgeon County cannot be overstated.”

“Reegan has played a critical role in realizing what the Sturgeon County experience could become, from beautiful winter light pathways in Cardiff Park to helping the County strengthen relationships and partnerships for the Villeneuve Airshows, and everything in between,” added Hnatiw, “Reegan knows how to dream big and do the hard work it takes to realize positive outcomes.”

“On behalf of Council, I want to wish Reegan the very best, knowing his work ethic, energy, broad experience, and interests served the County well; he will certainly be missed,” said Mayor Hnatiw.

Effective October 1, Travis Peter, Sturgeon County’s General Manager of Development Services Division, will serve as Interim CAO.

Council is acting quickly to launch a Canada-wide search for Sturgeon County’s next administrative leader and intends to have the role permanently filled over the coming months.

“We look forward to supporting Mr. Peter in his role as the Interim CAO,” said Hnatiw, “Sturgeon County has so much depth in our organization, guided by expert staff who will certainly ensure there is no disruption to County operations and service delivery during the change in leadership. Our staff does incredible work and will ensure stability during this transition.”

Sturgeon County remains committed to achieving municipal excellence and advancing its strategic priorities, which include listening to residents, offering high-quality services, building safe communities, establishing diverse business opportunities, and having a modern and adaptive administration.

Sturgeon County facilities will be closed on Monday, September 30 to recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
