Sturgeon County Council Compensation Review

Independent task force presents recommendations for Council compensation.

At the September 10, 2024, Sturgeon County Council meeting, the Council Remuneration Task Force presented a report with its recommendations on compensation for the Mayor and Councillors.

The Task Force compared Sturgeon County’s compensation structure—covering salary, benefits, and allowances—against 11 comparator municipalities. The review found that current compensation generally aligns with other municipalities and proposes adjustments to the Mayor’s base remuneration, mileage structure, and professional development allowance.

“Compensation can be a sensitive topic for elected officials,” said Mayor Alanna Hnatiw. “We believe the best way to approach the discussion and ensure fairness is through an independent and transparent review process.”

The 2024 Council Remuneration Task Force was established when Sturgeon County Council passed Bylaw 1636/24 at the January 30, 2024, Council meeting. The Task Force is comprised of five Sturgeon County residents who were asked to review and make recommendations on appropriate compensation for the Mayor and Councillors. A third-party consultant and Sturgeon County staff supported the Task Force’s work by providing data and conducting research.

Council will consider the Task Force’s recommendations at an October 2024 Council meeting. Any changes to pay and benefits are recommended to take effect after the October 2025 Municipal Election.

“The compensation review reflects our commitment to transparency and accountability in spending taxpayer dollars,” said Mayor Hnatiw. “We are focused on serving the community and providing good value for residents.”
