Here are the highlights from the October 11, 2022, Sturgeon County Council Meeting.
Regulated Property Tax Policy (Replacement of Significant Tax Revenue Growth Policy)
Council approved the Regulated Property Tax Policy, which focuses on planning for long-term growth and streamlining financial reporting. The policy was created to help the County manage its dependence on tax revenues received from heavy industrial properties (which are assessed by the Government of Alberta) and helps with assessment forecasting, monitoring and reporting back to Council in a more efficient way.
Updated Regulations for Cardiff Park Use
Council gave three readings of Bylaw 1603/22, which sets out requirements for use of and the penalties for anyone who is charged or convicted of an offence with respect to use of Cardiff Park. The new bylaw includes changes specific to each offence.
Sturgeon County Broadband Initiative – Phase 1 Project Update and Future Planning
Council received an update on the Broadband Initiative Phase 1 project, including a construction progress report. To date, approximately 73 per cent of eligible property owners in the Phase 1 area have signed access agreements to have broadband installed on their premises.
As progress continues with the project, Administration is starting to look forward to the next phase, which which will focus on the future roll-out of broadband to the the County. To assist with the planning, including identifying ways to access provincial and federal funding, Council approved $300,000 from the General Operating Reserve for design of future phases of Sturgeon County’s Broadband Initiative.
Cunningham Family – Meadowview Bridge Commemorative Naming Presentation
Members of the Cunningham Family attended the Council Meeting for a presentation regarding the commemorative naming of the bridge on Meadowview Drive east of Range Road 261A as Cunningham Bridge. Council had approved the commemorative naming during the January 25, 2022, Council Meeting.
