At its August 25, 2026, Council Meeting, Sturgeon County Council supported the development of policy options related to the County’s positions on intermunicipal governance and efficiency.
As municipalities across Alberta evaluate how local governments collaborate, deliver services, and manage costs, Sturgeon County is undertaking this review to demonstrate leadership and provide greater clarity on its approach to regional governance and long-term sustainability for residents within the area.
The review will examine a range of topics, including the effectiveness and efficiency of governance structures within the Sturgeon region and the six municipalities that operate within it. It will also consider how those municipalities deliver services, share costs, coordinate planning, and make decisions that affect residents and businesses across municipal boundaries.
In addition, Council will explore potential policy positions related to municipal restructuring scenarios, including dissolution and amalgamation. The objective is to establish a clear framework that would guide the County’s approach should such proposals arise in the future, while helping inform local decision-making processes.
Sturgeon County values its strong relationships with neighbouring municipalities and remains committed to regional collaboration through intermunicipal agreements, shared governance bodies, and its significant cost-sharing partnerships. The review is intended to strengthen the County’s ability to participate effectively in regional discussions while ensuring the interests of all regional residents remain the primary consideration.
The review process will proceed through Council’s Governance and Council Services Committee before recommendations are brought forward for Council’s official consideration.
