Sturgeon County’s First Parks Bylaw: Enhancing Enjoyment, Safety, and Stewardship

As part of the 2022–2025 Strategic Plan, Sturgeon County Council committed to developing a dedicated Parks Bylaw to improve park management, support responsible use, and close enforcement gaps.

Learn more about the Bylaw and the ongoing Future Parks and Trails project.

Why a Parks Bylaw?

Until now, the County relied on general bylaws to manage park-related issues. These tools left gaps in regulation and enforcement. The new Parks Bylaw is Sturgeon County’s first comprehensive framework specifically focused on parks, ensuring they remain safe, welcoming, and sustainable for everyone.

What the Bylaw Does:

Supports Park Services and Operations

The bylaw allows the County to regulate and authorize park-related activities, such as:

  • Haying, grazing, and tree harvesting
  • Business operations and special events
  • Use of amenities (e.g., playgrounds, rinks, community gardens)
  • Rental of picnic shelters and liquor licensing

Enhances Safety and Enforcement

New and updated regulations will:

  • Protect people, property, and the environment
  • Prohibit vandalism and harmful or disruptive behavior
  • Regulate cannabis, alcohol, smoking, and vaping
  • Extend rules for off-highway vehicles and dogs in designated parks
  • Improve waste and fire safety management
  • Require safety gear for bikes, e-bikes, and e-scooters
  • Update fines to reflect the new rules

What’s Next?

The bylaw has been informed by public and stakeholder input since July 2024. First Reading has been completed by Council July 15 2025, and Second and Third Readings are planned for September 2025.  Should Council approve the Bylaw there will be an education period for residents to understand the impacts.

The career portal will be undergoing scheduled maintenance from October 23 to October 25. During this time users will not be able to view or apply to job postings.

On November 18 at 7:55 PM there will be a test of the emergency wireless and broadcast systems.
