Sturgeon County Council, at a Special Council Meeting held on August 6, 2026, and upon the recommendation of the Agricultural Service Board, declared an agricultural disaster for the 2026 growing season. The declaration follows ongoing monitoring of agricultural conditions and recognizes the significant impacts of excessive moisture, localized flooding, and prolonged wet weather on producers throughout the region. These conditions have substantially affected field access, delayed seeding and harvest activities, hindered crop development, and reduced overall agricultural productivity.
Many agricultural lands remain saturated, with the prolonged wet conditions increasing concerns regarding crop health, reduced yields, forage production, and long-term impacts to farm operations. Continued wet conditions may also prevent or delay field operations. Sturgeon County has been monitoring the situation through various data sources and tools. Agriculture is a cornerstone of our community and local economy. The ongoing impacts of excessive moisture are creating significant uncertainty for producers and placing additional financial and operational pressures on farming operations throughout the municipality.
The County is considering options to formally recognize the severity of the conditions being experienced by local producers and to communicate these concerns to provincial and federal decision-makers. The intent is to bring attention to the challenges facing the agricultural community and support continued assessment of the impacts on producers. The County is also coordinating with neighbouring municipalities and regional partners to better understand the broader impacts across the region and to advocate for appropriate support measures.
Sturgeon County has a resilient agricultural community and remains committed to working with producers, industry organizations, and government partners to monitor conditions, gather information, and advocate on behalf of those affected by flooding and excessive moisture.
