Sturgeon County acknowledges Gibbons to remain independent

Government of Alberta confirms future of Gibbons

Sturgeon County acknowledges the Minister of Municipal Affairs’ decision that the Town of Gibbons will remain an independent municipality following the completion of the province’s viability review process and community vote.

The County recognizes the significant effort undertaken throughout the review, including by the province, the Town of Gibbons, and community members. In response to the town’s request for a review and the provincial requirements, Sturgeon County was also obliged to commit substantial resources to support this review, resulting in considerable unplanned work for the organization.

This viability review provided an opportunity to examine governance, service delivery, and long-term sustainability of the town, while engaging residents in discussions about Gibbons’ future. While the outcome confirms that a dissolution will not proceed, Sturgeon County remains committed to maintaining a productive and respectful relationship with the town. Strong intermunicipal partnerships are essential to supporting regional growth, service coordination, and shared priorities.

Sturgeon County will continue to work in line with Alberta’s legislative practices, along with the Town of Gibbons and other regional partners in the best interest of collective residents and businesses. The County wishes Gibbons success as it moves forward.

In February 2026, the Minister of Municipal Affairs initiated an expedited viability review at the request of Town of Gibbons Council. The process examined the town’s finances, infrastructure, service delivery, governance, and administration, culminating into a ‘Town of Gibbons Viability Report.’ Residents voted on June 24 and 25, 2026, on whether to remain an independent municipality or dissolve and become a hamlet within Sturgeon County. The results of that vote showed 68.5% of those who cast a ballot were in favour of remaining independent.
