Sheltering in Place

In certain emergencies, you may be instructed to shelter in place. This means finding the safest area near you and creating as much distance and as many barriers possible between yourself and the threat.

Sheltering in place will look different depending on the type of emergency and your location. The most common situations include severe weather or hazardous air quality.

Plan for different scenarios. You could be:

  • Travelling or stuck in traffic
  • At home with friends or family
  • At the office, school or another location away from loved ones.

Each situation may require a different approach. Take a few minutes to assess the places you frequent, such as your workplace, classroom or other spaces, and identify areas that could serve as safe shelter if needed.
