Fast and reliable internet service is very important to Sturgeon County residents and businesses. In a 2023 survey, 72% of survey respondents in the County rated it as an essential need and another other 17% rated it as very important.
Getting the level of service needed can be challenging outside of urban areas like Edmonton and St. Albert. Sturgeon County has been working with Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to improve service in the County, and in some areas built a fibre network right to homes and businesses. Fibre service offers unparalleled speed, reliability, and security at a price comparable with urban service.
Sturgeon County Fibre Network
Fibre optic cable provides exceptional speeds and reliability. The portion of Sturgeon County west of Highway 2 and south of Highway 642 has fibre to some homes and businesses. This includes subdivisions, hamlets, and business parks in that area, as well as homes and businesses along the fibre route, including:
Subdivisions:
- Dover Estates
- Fairhaven
- Hansen’s
- Northern Lights
- Pine Sands
- Reyda Vista
- Rol Anna Park
- Shil Shol Estates
- Silver Chief
- Terrault Estates
- Turfside Park
- West Fairhaven
- Westwood Lane
Hamlets:
- Calahoo
- Riviere Qui Barre
- Villeneuve
Business Parks:
- Heritage Industrial Park
- ProNorth Industrial Park
- Villeneuve Airport
Moving?
If you’re moving, please contact your ISP to have their equipment removed. If you have fibre there is also a small Optical Network Terminal (ONT) box that needs to stay with the home or business, as it is an important part of the fibre network and is owned by Sturgeon County. If someone is moving into the home, they will not be able to subscribe to a fibre service if the ONT is missing.
Call Before You Dig
There may be fibre or cable lines buried on or near your property. Fibre service is buried just below ground level and is easily damaged, so make sure you have all utilities located before you dig. You can ask for utilities to be located and marked (including fibre) by contacting Utility Safety Partners (was Alberta One-Call) at utilitysafety.ca or (800) 242-3447. There is no cost for this service.
Wireless Internet
Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISP) install towers throughout the County and then put an antenna on your house to connect it to the tower.
Wireless internet speeds are highly dependent on distance from the tower, topography, and barriers such as tree cover and buildings. You will often get the best service from the towers closest to you, subject to hills and trees.

New to the County?
If you’re new to the County, either as a resident or business owner, you will likely be looking for high-speed internet. To ensure you get the level of internet that best meets your needs for speed, reliability, customer service, and pricing, it is important that you understand and research your alternatives. Neighbours can be an excellent source of information. Here is an overview of some of your options.
Potential Fibre Resellers
Sturgeon County, in partnership with Canadian Fiber Optics Corporation (CFOC) operates an open access fibre network in areas of the County. Internet Service Providers can sign up to be a Retail Service Provider and market internet services to homes and businesses with fibre access.
Business Model
Retail Service Providers are able to market services to fibre connected homes and businesses in the County. The choice of which services to provide and the cost of those services is at the discretion of the Retail Service Provider. A portion of subscriber payments must be remitted to CFOC in return for operating the network, and in turn CFOC remits a portion of that payment to the County as part of the return on investment to the County for the network.
