Fences

You normally do not need a permit to build a fence or screening if it follows the below rules:

  • It is located on your property.
  • In any residential district, it is not higher than 1.83 metres (6 feet) in a rear yard or side yard not next to a public road.
  • In any residential district except for the agriculture (AG) and country residential (R1) districts, it is not higher than one metre (3.3 feet) in a front yard or flanking front yard next to a public road.
  • In any agriculture (AG) district for extensive livestock purposes, it is not higher than 2.44 metres (8 feet).
  • In any commercial or industrial district, it is not higher than 2.44 metres (8 feet).
  • It does not exceed the sight triangle requirements specified in the Land Use Bylaw.
  • In any residential district, no barbed wire is included.

If your fence doesn’t follow the above rules, you need to apply for a variance.

We suggest discussing your fence with your neighbours.

Talking to your neighbours and planning your fence cooperatively can help maintain a good, neighbourly relationship.
