A home-based business means you operate a business from your home. The business is located within part of a dwelling unit or accessory building – such as a basement suite, garden suite or garage suite – and is operated by at least one resident of the dwelling for a business activity that results in a product or service.
There are three levels of home-based businesses in Sturgeon County.
Level 1
The business operates from a home office and does not need any signage, storage of goods, or client or vender visitations, including deliveries or employees.
Level 2
The business may have signage and storage within an accessory building or dwelling, but does not use exterior storage.
Allowed activity at this business includes the following:
- up to one commercial trailer, passenger vehicle and commercial vehicle
- up to two non-resident employees
- up to eight vehicle visits per 24-hour period in the agriculture (AG) land use district or up to four vehicle visits per 24-hour period in all other land use districts.
Level 3
The business may have signage and external storage to a maximum size of one per cent of the parcel size.
Allowed activity at this business includes the following:
- up to three commercial trailers
- up to three commercial vehicles
- up to two passenger vehicles
- up to four non-resident employees
- up to 10 vehicle visits per 24-hour period
Permit Requirements
- Home-based business development permit application
- Land title certificate searched within 30 days prior to the application
- Alberta Transportation Roadside Development Permit Application (if proposed development is within 800 metres of a highway)
- Corporate registry, if applicable
