Sturgeon County has a series of plans that guide its work. These help us advance with intention.
The Strategic Plan is created by Council and informed by the community. It sets a long-term vision and outcomes that define the County’s direction over the next 30 years. Council identified 4-year term objectives, which are the priorities that will help the County achieve its goals. Each of these elements are supported by principles that outline how decisions are made and how work is carried out.
Read on to learn how we’re taking decisive steps to make things happen and ensuring we remain future-ready to meet new opportunities and challenges as they arise.

Our Vision
Sturgeon County: Thriving communities, responsible growth, and a vibrant future connecting with land, people, and opportunity.
Our Guiding Principles
These principles guide Council decision-making, service delivery, and how the organization works with residents, partners, and each other.
Accountability and Transparency
Council decisions are based on sound reasoning, evidence, and measured results. Decisions and results are shared clearly with residents and partners.
Respectful Relationships
Council sets the expectation for respectful and constructive relationships. Work is carried out carefully with residents, Indigenous communities, regional partners, industry, and other orders of government.
Adaptability & Future Readiness
Council considers long-term impacts, risks, and opportunities when making decisions. Policies, services, and infrastructure adapt to remain strong over time.
Innovation & Pursuit of Excellence
Council encourages innovation and meets its financial and legal responsibilities. Services are consistent, high quality, and cost-effective, supported by a capable workforce and modern approaches.
Our Goals: Community Outcomes
The below community outcomes set the long-term direction over the next 30 years; they guide decision-making to ensure the community grows intentionally.

Planned Growth
A diverse community where growth is planned and financially sustainable. Investment, infrastructure, and land-use decisions support a healthy economy, value farmland, and keep the County as a great place to live, work, and invest.

Thriving Communities
Home to safe, connected communities where people have quality of life and pride of place. Communities are supported by easy-to-access services, social and recreation activities, and genuine relationships with residents, businesses, and Indigenous neighbours.

Environmental Responsibility
Care for land, water, air, and natural areas while supporting responsible growth. Decisions strengthen natural and farm areas and protect the environment for current and future generations.
Our Actions: Council Objectives
For each Outcome, Council identified 4-year term objectives – key action items – that will help us achieve our direction.
The below actions are guiding our work between 2026 to 2029.

Planned Growth
Direct growth to priority areas by aligning land-use, infrastructure, and servicing decisions to support financially sound and balanced growth while considering farmland.
Strengthen economic competitiveness by supporting small business, industry, agriculture, and new sectors through clear and predictable planning.
Improve infrastructure readiness and reliability to support growth and community needs by focusing on key infrastructure, transportation, broadband, and utility investments.

Thriving Communities
Enhance community safety and wellbeing by supporting well-designed neighbourhoods, reliable roads, strong emergency services, suitable bylaws, and land reclamation advocacy.
Improve access to valued services in parks, natural areas, trails, and public spaces by aligning set standards and investments with community needs.
Strengthen relationships with Indigenous and neighbouring communities through respect, working together, and shared learning.
Support accessible and connected communities that reflect local values by encouraging people to volunteer and lead community activities.

Environmental Responsibility
Include the environment in planning and development decisions to care for natural and farm lands, water and air sheds, and sensitive ecosystems.
Strengthen climate resilience by including risk reduction in infrastructure planning, land use, and emergency management.
Reduce environmental impacts from municipal operations through better energy use, careful use of resources, and sustainable practices.
