Home-Based Business

A home-based business means you operate a business from your home. The business is located within part of a dwelling unit or accessory building – such as a basement suite, garden suite or garage suite – and is operated by at least one resident of the dwelling for a business activity that results in a product or service.

There are three levels of home-based businesses in Sturgeon County.

Level 1

The business operates from a home office and does not need any signage, storage of goods, or client or vender visitations, including deliveries or employees.

Level 2

The business may have signage and storage within an accessory building or dwelling, but does not use exterior storage.

Allowed activity at this business includes the following:

  • up to one commercial trailer, passenger vehicle and commercial vehicle
  • up to two non-resident employees
  • up to eight vehicle visits per 24-hour period in the agriculture (AG) land use district or up to four vehicle visits per 24-hour period in all other land use districts.

Level 3

The business may have signage and external storage to a maximum size of one per cent of the parcel size.

Allowed activity at this business includes the following:

  • up to three commercial trailers
  • up to three commercial vehicles
  • up to two passenger vehicles
  • up to four non-resident employees
  • up to 10 vehicle visits per 24-hour period
