Stay alert and help prevent fires in our community

Although this spring’s Redwater Recreation Area fire is no longer active, it burned deep into the ground in some places. That means hidden hotspots could still rise to the surface, creating smoke or even starting new fires. This can also be the case on private property where burn permits were issued in the last year.

As we move into September, the risk remains—especially when plants dry out and turn brown. That’s when fire can spread more easily.

Emergency Services is actively patrolling the Redwater Recreation Area and using thermal drones to check for heat. But we all have a role to play.

Here’s how you can help:

  • Keep an eye on your property for signs of heat or smoke.
  • If you see a hotspot that isn’t spreading, call our enforcement complaint line at 780-939-8418.
  • If you see fire spreading, call 911 immediately.
  • Obey the current fire restriction and check SturgeonCounty.ca regularly for updates to fire restrictions and bans.
  • Protect your home from wildfires by taking FireSmart actions now.

Be FireSmart

Did you know that FireSmart homes are significantly less likely to be lost to wildfire? Making your home FireSmart means taking steps when maintaining your property, landscaping your yard, and undertaking a renovation or construction project to lessen the chance that your home will be lost or damaged by wildfire.

This includes simple actions like:

  • keeping your lawn watered and maintained;
  • clearing vegetation and combustible material around your home; and,
  • opting for non-combustible landscaping materials.
