Sturgeon County to withdraw from Edmonton Global

At its meeting on Dec. 12, Sturgeon County Council voted to withdraw from Edmonton Global.

Sturgeon County contributed approximately $600,000 to Edmonton Global since 2017. This includes annual amounts of approximately $137,700 since 2020 to support the organization in attracting global investment to the region.

“We recognize that regional business attraction and development takes years to achieve and have invested in Edmonton Global since 2017,” said Mayor Alanna Hnatiw. “I will be formally summarizing Council’s concerns to the Edmonton Global Board.”

Member municipalities must provide two years’ notice before withdrawing from Edmonton Global. This means Sturgeon County will continue its membership until 2025 and will retain all shareholder benefits until that time.

The County remains committed to regional collaboration. This is evident in its work to support the Villeneuve Landing Network, its leadership role with the Edmonton Region Hydrogen Hub, membership with the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Board, and membership with Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association.

Sturgeon County will continue to work alongside Edmonton Global and its partners until the withdrawal takes effect.

#SturgeonCounty offices will be operating with reduced hours May 17, to accommodate a staff training event. Offices will re-open from 10:30 AM - 4:30 PM.

A fire restriction is in effect for Sturgeon County and the towns of Bon Accord, Legal and Redwater.
