The Youth Leadership program is a free volunteer initiative for youth aged 12 to 19 living in Sturgeon County and surrounding areas. Youth Leadership offers participants a unique opportunity to develop valuable job and life skills through community involvement and hands-on experience. This program runs from September to June annually.
Communications
Email is the primary method of communication for this program. To support job readiness skill building, youth are asked to provide an email address they personally check, rather than a parent or guardians. Youth are expected to check and reply to emails in a timely manner. Monthly meeting agendas, volunteer opportunities, and skill-building session details will be shared via email. Youth are also welcome to contact Chantal Firmaniuk, Community Programming Coordinator, by text at 780.915.5255.
Time Commitment
We understand that life can be busy, which is why the Youth Leadership program is designed to be flexible. Volunteers are asked to commit (between September to June) to a minimum of:
- 5 planning meetings
- 4 volunteer shifts
- 3 skill building sessions
Youth who meet the outlined criteria/minimums will receive an invitation to the end of the year celebration. Previous years have included activities such as horseback riding and going to the West Edmonton Mall Waterpark.
In addition, if the minimums are met, the youth will get a reference letter in June outlining their volunteer hours, skill building they received and difference they made in the community.
Expectations
- At monthly meetings:
- No electronic usage
- Mutual respect among all
- Checking for email communications regularly and responding when required
- Attend a minimum of 5 out of the 8 monthly planning meetings, 4 volunteer shifts and 3 skill building sessions
- To display a positive attitude and be respectful to all
- To arrive ON TIME for all days I am scheduled to volunteer at. If I cannot make my shift for any reason, I will call the Community Programming Coordinator as soon as I know I am unable to volunteer
- Not to take part in activities that will put my safety and others safety at risk
