Fire advisories, restrictions and bans are issued due to variety of factors, including:
- weather conditions
- feedback from residents
- fire conditions throughout the region and province
The below information gives an idea of the conditions put in place for each fire level, please refer to the active fire level for additional restrictions and conditions.
Fire Advisory
Fire advisories let you know that the fire hazard rating has increased and that restrictions may be placed on some types of burning.
The following activities are allowed, with caution:
- Yard and garden debris fires, burn barrels and incinerators (fire permit required)
- Recreational backyard firepits
- Propane and natural gas-powered appliances
- Charcoal barbeques
Fire Restriction
During a fire restriction, some types of burning are not allowed while others can continue. You should read the details of the fire restriction for specific instructions.
No new burn permits or fireworks permits will be issued. All current fire permits issued – including those for burn barrels and incinerators – are suspended until further notice. All outdoor fires presently burning, whether set under the authority of a fire permit or not, must be extinguished. Firework permits issued for low-hazard/family fireworks are also suspended and the use of exploding targets and tracer rounds is not allowed.
You can still use the following:
- backyard firepits for warming or cooking
- propane barbecues
- portable propane fireplaces
- propane heaters
This restriction does not apply to the use of ATVs or OHVs.
Sturgeon County urges the public to use extreme caution when working or driving in grassy areas, to be mindful of hot exhaust, and to keep vehicles clean and free of debris as smoldering debris can start fires.
