Residents of Sturgeon County and area are advised to stay off the Sturgeon River south of Meadowview Drive on RR 261A, and to avoid using it as a water source as Alberta Environment cleans up a small oil spill. Residents are also asked to stay away from the area to give clean-up crews space to work.
Up to 10 gallons of used oil have spilled into the river near Meadowview Drive and RR 261A. Once spill response measures are removed, the area will be safe to enter. Currently, it does not appear any oil has entered Big Lake.
Residents and businesses drawing water upstream from the incident site may still draw water from the river.
Alberta Environment is asking anyone with any information about this incident to call their information line at 1-800-222-6514. Callers have the option to remain anonymous.
