The below statement from Mayor Alanna Hnatiw is in response to the wildfire near Redwater Provincial Recreation Area in Sturgeon County.
“On behalf of Sturgeon County Council, I offer my heartfelt condolences to everyone impacted by the wildfire near Redwater Provincial Recreation Area in Sturgeon County last night and as the situation continues today. I am deeply saddened to learn that a home has been lost in this devastating fire, and I wish to express my sympathies during this incredibly difficult time. Please know that the entire community stands with you and everyone affected by the wildfire, offering our support as you face the challenges ahead.
At this time, Sturgeon County is in a State of Local Emergency and crews continue to battle the ongoing wildfire. The Sturgeon Regional Emergency Management Partnership (SREMP) emergency coordination centre remains activated, and a fire ban is now in effect (including a ban on ATVs and OHVs). SREMP is working closely with all relevant agencies to bring together the necessary expertise to address this dangerous situation effectively. Please stay away from the area until further notice.
I want to thank the members of the Sturgeon County Emergency Services team, including Chief Chad Moore, members from Sturgeon County fire services, and all supporting staff contributing to the emergency response efforts. We are proud of their dedication and are grateful for their tireless service to our community.
I also want to recognize and thank the many surrounding municipalities that came to our aid—both on the front lines fighting the wildfire and behind the scenes supporting the response. Their collaboration and generosity have been invaluable, and their commitment in our time of need is a testament to the strength of our region.
Stay tuned to SturgeonCounty.ca for the latest information.”
